Spanish biaxially oriented polypropylene (BOPP) films producer Poligal is adding a new film
metallising line at its production plant at Arcos de Valdevez in northern Portugal.
The Bobst K5000 2850 metalliser, with AlOx production capability, is set to be installed at the
Portuguese facility where the company manufactures both BOPP and cast polypropylene films.
The plant is equipped with a 30,000 tpa, 8.2m wide Brückner BOPP extrusion line and, since last
year a 12,600 tpa Reifenhäuser cast PP extrusion unit.
The new finishing equipment is the first to be installed at the Arcos de Valdevez plant. Poligal
already operates three metallising lines at its BOPP films plant at Narón in north western Spain.
Bobst’s metalliser is the first line to be supplied in Europe for the BOPP market owing to growing
demand for high barrier transparent film to satisfy requirements for product visibility and extended
shelf life.
One attraction of the Bobst equipment for Poligal is its facility for quick switching from aluminium to
AlOx processing. The new line will increase the Iberian firm’s metallising capacity to over 10,000
tpa and improve the plant’s operating efficiency.
Poligal, part of the diverse family run Grup Peralada of Barcelona, is also involved in a major €30m
greenfield project in Poland where it is constructing a new 40,000 tpa BOPP at Skarbimierz, 60 km
south of Wrocław.
The location of its latest production unit will bring Poligal closer to a significant section of its
European clientele, particularly the rapidly growing Polish flexible packaging market as well as
placing it just two hours from Germany.
The Skarbimierz plant, with an 8.7m wide 5-layer Brückner BOPP extrusion line, is due to be up and
running by August this year. Poligal is considering making a further investment with the addition of
metallisation line at its first Polish production site.
With the completion of the new Polish facility, the Spanish group will bring its total BOPP capacity
to around 100,000 tpa. It can currently produce up to 50,000 tpa of this film with a 12,000 tpa CPP
capacity.
Poligal’s major investment in Poland is in line with the firm’s strategy of growing its size and
geographical spread while continuing as a quality conscious medium sized player in the film
manufacturing business, its chief executive Santiago Font explained last year.
